Hip-Hop pioneer and member of the legendary break dancing set the Rock Steady Crew, Frosty Freeze died Thursday (April 3) in New York City at the age of 44.
According to the Associated Press, Freeze (born Wayne Frost) passed away yesterday at Mount Sinai Medical Center after suffering from a long illness. Jorge "Pop Master Fabel" Pabon, senior vice president of the Rock Steady Crew confirmed his death, but Frost illness was not identified.
Mostly known for his acrobatic flips and innovative dance moves- the creator of the "Suicide" flip, where one flips in the air and lands flat on his/her back- Frost starred in the 1983 groundbreaking documentary Style Wars and classic b-boy film Wild Style. But it was his appearance in the movie Flashdance that introduced breakdancing to the world and mainstream pop culture.
The Rock Steady Crew was founded
in 1977 in the Bronx and gained notoriety in the '80s as its members, including Mr. Frost, Mr. Pabon, Crazy Legs, Ken Swift and others, brought their high flying, pop's and locks across the world. Having toured with Fab 5 Freddy, Futura 2000 and Kool Lady Blue, the Crew was honored at the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors in 2004 and celebrated its 30th anniversary in July with a reunion and performance.
Freeze is survived by a brother and two sisters.
