Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Grand Hustle/Atlantic rapper T.I. will visit Philadelphia this Sunday (April 20) to participate in the upcoming Turn Up the Vote National Hip-Hop Summit at TempleUniversity.

Tip will headline the event - sponsored by Hip-Hop Research and Education Fund (HREF), PowerPAC and the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN) - alongside mogul and philanthropist Russell Simmons and R&B star Ciara. They will address topics affecting American youth, such as poverty, healthcare, education, alcohol and drug prevention, violence in urban communities, ending the war in Iraq as well as the importance of civic engagement.

As SOHH previously reported, as part of the terms of his deal, T.I. has been ordered to serve over 1,000 hours of community service, among other penalties, after pleading guilty to federal gun charges.

"I am pleased to have the opportunity to travel to Philadelphia to participate in the Hip-Hop Summit," T.I. said via statement. "We are going to encourage young people to go out to vote. I personally know the value of having the right to vote and it taken away from you, but I will add my voice to help inspire others to take seriously this right and responsibility."

Additional confirmed panelists include: Jim Jones, Flo Rida, Webbie, Lil' Boosie, Rosci and Terrence J (BET's "106 & Park"), Chrisette Michelle, Rich Boy, Styles P, Lyfe Jennings, Lil X, Green Lantern, Gorilla Zoe, Emily King and NAACP National Director, Youth and College Division, Stefanie Brown.

"Hip-Hop is changing the world and changing America," Dr. Benjamin Chavis, President/CEO of the Hip-Hop Research and Education Fund (HREF) told SOHH. "The Philadelphia presidential primary, to the greatest extent possible, will be determined by the hip-hop community. Our "Turn Up The Vote" Summit at TempleUniversity on April 20, will represent the best of hip-hop as issues are raised and hundreds of thousands are mobilized to get out the vote."

The Turn Up the Vote National Hip-Hop Summit takes place two days before Pennsylvania's April 22nd primary. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. For more information and to download free tickets, log onto hsan.org
