SOHH Exclusive: David Banner Reacts To Sean Bell Verdict, ''I'm Hurt & I'm Scared, Too''

In the wake of Friday's (April 25) verdict acquitting three New York City cops who shot and killed Sean Bell in 2006, Mississippi rapper/activist David Banner, Compton rep The Game and Queens bred lyricist Prodigy have all gone on the record to voice their outrage.

Not one to bite his tongue, Banner has been vocal in his speaking up for hip-hop, as with his stance against Al Sharpton's criticism of rap lyrics as well the mishandled Hurricane Katrina tragedy. Today, he gave SOHH an earful about what he sees as New York giving African-Americans the middle finger, and the "cowards" who allow it to continue.

"I was outraged but I've gotten to the point where I don't get mad anymore," Banner told SOHH exclusively. "I have to think logically. I think one of the problems with America is that we've adapted Bush's cowboy mentality to everything. With the Sean Bell situation New York is basically saying, 'f*ck n*ggas.'"

Banner was shocked that while the three officers were brought up on eight counts, not even one charge against the cops stuck.

"[They] shot Sean Bell 51* times and they got eight counts and you can't convict on one count," Banner said. "Not even endangerment? You shot 51 times homie!"

The rapper said "cowards" allow injustices to go unpunished and he counts himself amongst the lot.

"They know that we not gonna do sh*t," he said. "We ain't gonna do sh*t but beef amongst ourselves. Our generation is a bunch of cowards and they know that and that's including me. All of us, we cowards and if you're not a coward then do something about it.

"All these tough ass rappers, where they at now," he added. "Where are the football players? The basketball players? Where are our senators? Where are the other black cops that work with them cops that shot their children? They're cowards!"

West Coast rapper The Game took his frustrations into the studio and recently recorded the track "911 Is A Joke," which debuts tomorrow on ThisIzGame.com.

"This could have easily been me, my brother, my family," Game said via a press release. So this song is for Sean Bell from my heart. My deepest condolences go out to his family and wife Nicole Bell."

"The NYPD is just a branch of corruption connected to a giant corrupt tree called the United States government," Prodigy of Mobb Deep said via a press release. "Right now we have a government that controls the people, instead of people that control their government. Until we can do that, there'll be several more incidents like the murder of Sean Bell."

And until then, Banner said he has reason to fear.

"It pisses me off, I'm hurt and to a certain degree I'm scared, too," Banner said. "I got to be enough of a man to say that."

* According to official reports the officers shot 50 times, not 51.

The Roots Vs. Def Jam, ''As Each Album Goes By, The Risk Of Annihilation Becomes Closer''

After making the leap to Def Jam, Philadelphia hip-hop band The Roots continue to struggle at the label.

In a recent Billboard article, Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson details the disconnect between the group and Island Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid.

"He has no idea that 'Birthday Girl' isn't even on the album," Thompson told Billboard. "They don't know we shot the 'Rising Down' video. They just know they approved an (electronic press kit) budget."

Originally slated to be their radio-friendly single, "Birthday Girl," which features Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, was praised by the staff at Def Jam, but after the song was poorly received by fans, The Roots opted to leave it off the U.S. version of their upcoming album Rising Down.

In over ten years of recording, the group has yet to go platinum. Their highest selling album, 1999's Things Fall Apart moved 906,000 units, while their first outing on Def Jam, 2006's Game Theory fell far short of that number, selling just 204,000 copies, according to the Nielsen SoundScan.

"At a time, it was safe to be the Roots," Thompson told Billboard. "Now as each album goes by, the risk of annihilation becomes closer and closer. That's why this album is almost our defining moment."

The album opens and closes with snippets from a 1994 conversation the group held regarding their unhappiness at MCA. Thompson told Billboard the drops were included to show their current struggles at Def Jam aren't the first time The Roots have "been mired in some sort of label battle."

L.A. Reid has not commented on The Roots situation, but Def Jam marketing director Erica Holley told Billboard that promotional initiatives for Rising Down are in full swing.

Despite The Roots' long history of label struggles and faltering sales, Thompson says he's satisfied with his career.

"If someone asked me, 'Do you want to release two albums and sell over 2 million copies, or do you want a 20-year career but none of your records will sell over 500,000 units?,' that's a tough question. But, looking back, I wouldn't change a thing."

Rising Down hits stores tomorrow via Island Def Jam Recordings.

Jay-Z Comes To LeBron's Aid, Disses B-Ball Rival

With a release of a new freestyle, Jay-Z bypasses rappers who have recently taken jabs at him to call out NBA player DeShawn Stevenson.

The track seems to be the latest chapter in the ongoing rivalry between NBA star LeBron James and Washington Wizard guard DeShawn Stevenson. The basketball beef started when Stevenson called LeBron "overrated" and James said in repsonse, "With DeShawn Stevenson, it's kind of funny. It's almost like Jay-Z [responding to a negative comment] made by Soulja Boy. It doesn't make sense."

Stevenson then invited Soulja Boy to game 3 of the teams' current playoff series to heckle James.

Now, Jigga has thrown his hat in the ring, releasing "Blow The Whistle." On the short track, Jay dismisses the legitimacy of Stevenson's antics rhyming, "Ask my n*gga LeBron / we so big we ain't gotta respond / When you talking to a don / Please have respect like you talking to your mom." [Listen to the song here]

According to the Washington Post, the track was played in a local club several times and was accompanied by Cavaliers player Damon Jones getting on the mic to direct a few choice words to Stevenson as well.

After getting wind of both the song and comments by Jones from teammate Caron Butler, Stevenson later responded to the track, to Jones, and James.

"He says he has a lot of swag, but I don't think that's something to do," Stevenson said about James. "This is basketball. I'm not worried about the song. I'm not worried about what he did. But for Damon Jones to get on the mic. And I heard he was saying foul stuff about me and stuff like that, they're taking it beyond basketball to me."

He went on to say, "Everybody is saying the bad things that I'm saying nationally, but they don't understand why I'm mad. That stuff doesn't come out. I'd rather be the bad guy. People think I'm going at him, but they don't see the little stabs that he's doing."

"When I had Soulja Boy here. It was on the court," Stevenson said. "It was nothing disrespecting him or his family or even foul language."

And though Stevenson was caught in between Jay-Z's lyrical punchline, the hoops star had a more diplomatic response to Mr. Carter.

"Jay-Z is a legend. He'll go down in history. No disrespect to Jay-Z," Stevenson said. "I take it as a compliment. I like his music. I like everything he does. I would never go at a legend."

Sean Bell Protesters Cry Out For Justice! (After The Not Guilty Verdict)

BET News Reports "After the verdict in the Sean Bell case, cries and screams were heard from the anxious crowd. Protestors share there painful opinions"

Breaking News: Not Guilty, Cops Walk In Sean Bell Killing

The three New York City police officers, who fatally shot 23 year-old Sean Bell on his wedding day with 50 bullets, were cleared of all charges today (April 25) in Queens Supreme Court.

According to the New York Daily News, detectives Michael Olivier and Gescard Isnora were acquitted of first-degree and second-degree manslaughter charges, felony assault and reckless endangerment and Marc Cooper was cleared of reckless endangerment charges today by Judge Arthur Cooperman. The decision sparked tears in the courtroom and rage on the streets.

"The defendants are not guilty of all charges," declared Justice Cooperman. "The burden was on the people to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Each defendant was assumed to be innocent."

Sean Bell's widow, Nicole Paultre-Bell in tears stood up and ran out of the courtroom as Cooperman read his verdict.

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, assembled hundreds of extra cops in Jamaica, Queens, just in case there was trouble after the verdict.

"Some people were disappointed with the verdict and we understand that," Kelly said. "We don't anticipate violence but we are prepared for any contingencies."

As SOHH previously reported, Oliver, who fired 31 times and decorated undercover Detective Isnora, who fired 11 bullets, faced up to 25 years in prison for their charges and Cooper, who fired four shots, faced up to a year.

All three officers remain on modified duty and have surrendered their guns.

An outrage uncle of Bell sounded off on the verdict. "These guys are guilty," he said. "When is it going to stop?"

Bell was gunned down on the eve of his wedding day on November 25, 2006 outside a nightclub in Jamaica, Queens that was being investigated by undercover police officers. After leaving his bachelor party at Club Kalua, five plainclothes officers fired a hail of bullets at Bell and his friends, Trent Benefield and Joseph Guzman, as they attempted to leave the club by car.

The case has sparked a firestorm of controversy, reviving accusations that the NYPD are too quick to fire on suspects, particularly black ones. Detective Oliver is white, while Detectives Isnora and Cooper are black.

About an hour after the verdict was delivered, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg shared in the grief of the Bell family.

"There are no winners in a trial like this," Bloomberg said. "An innocent man lost his life, a bride lost her groom, two daughters lost their father, and a mother and a father lost their son. No verdict could ever end the grief that those who knew and loved Sean Bell suffer."

The Mayor's statement went on to urge peaceful protest by those who oppose the verdict.

"We are the same people that when the trial was wrongfully moved to Albany of Amadou Diallo, that I stood on these steps when they were acquitted and said, 'we're not going to throw one brick or one stick and we didn't. We're the same people," declared Reverend Al Sharpton, who's been advising the Bell family.

The attorney for Bell's widow expressed his disappointment in the judge's decision.

"Now it is clear what the answer is to this family about what the value of the life of an innocent person is in our community," said attorney Michael Hardy. "We now have to deal with that and we will."

Widow Nicole Paultre-Bell left the courthouse without comment as she join the rest of Sean Bell's family at the slain victim's gravesite for prayer.

Baby D Busted For Cocaine Trafficking

Atlanta-area rapper Baby D is being held in federal custody after being arrested for allegedly trafficking cocaine.

The rapper was arrested by authorities on March 26 in Dayton, Ohio and is currently being held without bond in the ButlerCounty jail. D, who's recently been enjoying the success of his latest single "I'm Bout Money," has denied all of the allegations against him in connection with the case.

This isn't the Decatur-bred artist's first brushe with the law. He currently has three pending assault charges in Tennessee where he has a bond set, but a warrant for his arrest in Georgia was recently dismissed.

Reps for Baby D say that they are unsure how his current legal situation will effect the release of his upcoming album, A-Town Secret Weapon, slated for an April 29 release on Koch Records.

Baby D recently chopped it up with SOHH to speak about the album.

"This album right here is 'gon do what it's supposed to do," he says. "I'm expecting the unexpected. I'm giving my fans the opportunity to say, 'I told ya'll Baby D was tight.' All my fans have been staying down with me through putting out albums independently."

"This album is all new sounds and a whole new feel," he boasted. "It's probably my best creation ever."

A-Town Secret Weapon features guest appearances from Gucci Mane, Shawty Lo, Pastor Troy, Sean Paul of the YoungBloodz and Lloyd.

SOHH Exclusive: ''50 Cent Should Just Let Young Buck Go Already,'' Ex-XXL EIC Weighs In

Former XXL Editor-In-Chief Elliott "YN" Wilson opens up about leaving the publication, the challenges of his new reality show, "Miss Rap Supreme," a possible Jay-Z biography, and his advice to 50 Cent.

This January, the public was shocked when it was revealed that Wilson had been dismissed from his XXL post. While tight-lipped regarding the circumstances of his removal, months later, Wilson says he's at peace with the change.

"It's business and a decision was made," YN told SOHH. "We move on. Everything comes to an end. I think it was shocking to people, which is flattering, because I think people feel like 'I can't imagine this without him.' That's cool, but at the end of the day it's a business and sometimes you're not on the same page and decisions get made. They're still in a strong state and everything is gonna be fine on my end."

Wilson also says he's unable to find anything negative to say about his newly appointed replacement, Datwon Thomas, who took over the reigns as EIC this February.

"I've got a lot of respect for him," Wilson admits. "He's a good dude. You can't hate Datwon. Trying to hate Datwon is like hating your mama. The irony is that he was somebody who was there before I took over who encouraged me to take the job in the first place, so we have a really rich history there."

These days Wilson is producing VH1's "Miss Rap Supreme" alongside his ego trip collective of hip-hop enthusiast. He told SOHH the team was surprised when Khia resorted to the tactics that forced them to eliminate her, since they'd previously favored her to win the competition.

"Before the nun part, she was kicking original raps and we were all impressed, like 'Khia is really talented, she might even win this damn thing, this will be great for us because she's dramatic, but also she's really committed to the process,'" Wilson said. "Then we get to the nun part and she dips into her bag of tricks. She's the type of girl they say Lauryn [Hill] and Foxy are, like she can be the sweetest girl and then get mad and go crazy and she's so emotional."

In other Wilson news, a Jay-Z biography may also be in the works. Wilson says the two are expected to meet about the potential project after the end of Hov's "Heart of the City" tour.

"He's the one making history," Wilson told SOHH. "I think the Live Nation deal is an intriguing situation. This guy is trying to be the Rolling Stones of hip-hop, someone who at 45-years-old can tear down the stage and be the top rapper and that's exciting for me because I don't know if he can do it. It's never been done but if anybody can do it, it's him. I think there's gonna be a lot of books about Jay-Z when it's all said and done, but I feel like I bring a perspective that needs to be told. I hope we can find a way to make it work."

Wilson also shared with SOHH his views on the turmoil at G-Unit, with Young Buck being ousted from the group but still signed to the label.

"50 should just let Young Buck go already," Wilson says. "I'm tired of hearing about it. 50 should just give the n*gga his contract and let him go already, like Olivia. Just let the n*gga go already. He's from the south, he wants to be friends with everybody. Let the n*gga ride. Come on Curtis. I'm gonna make some "Let Young Buck Go" t-shirts."

"Miss Rap Supreme" is on at 10 p.m. every Monday on VH1.

Mariah Carey Tops The Charts, Sells 463K Discs In First Week

Predicted to sell nearly half a million records with her latest release, mega songstress Mariah Carey breaks a personal first-week sales record (April 23).

E=MC2, Mariah's sixth No. 1 album, moved 463,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

HitsDailyDouble projected Carey's latest would sell over 500,000 copies in its first week. Just shy, the album's debut still marked Mimi's biggest sales week ever. She also takes the prize for highest sales week of the year.

With Carey's last album, The Emancipation of Mimi, also topping the charts in its debut week, Mariah is now flush with Madonna and Janet Jackson for the second most No. 1 albums among female artists, according to Billboard with six. Barbra Streisand gives the ladies something to strive for with eight No. 1 albums.

These new feats come after Mariah has already took the King's crown, topping Elvis Presley's record for hit records and making Billboard chart history.

Brand new Brit sensation Leona Lewis is also making history.

Lewis is the first debut album by a solo British-born artist to enter the chart at the top spot and Lewis is only the second British-born solo female to have a chart-topping album. Olivia Newton-John was the first.

Spirit slipped to the No. 2 spot this week though, selling 94,842 copies for a total of 300,232 discs sold in her two weeks on the charts.

Stay tuned for a full breakdown of the Billboard 200 tomorrow on SOHH's Hip-Hop and R&B Charts column.

Dave Chappelle's Ex-Manager Sues For Non-Payment

Tuesday, April 22, 2008 0

A former manager of Dave Chappelle is suing the superstar comedian--again. This time, he's asking the comedian to pay up on profits from several deals, including the hit TV show Chapelle famously walked away from.

Mustafa Abuelhija settled his first lawsuit with Chappelle back in '05 after he was fired without warning. The agreement was supposed to give Abuelhija 10% of the profits from Dave Chappelle's Block Party, 10% of the money Chappelle got from seasons 2, 3 and 4 of Chappelle's Show plus 10% of any money he received for the comedy special For What It's Worth according to TMZ.

Abuelhija says he hasn't seen any of the cash. So the former manager recently filed a new suit in New York claiming Chappelle has pulled in another $1.2 million since their settlement almost three years ago and he wants a 10% take.

At press time, Chappelle's lawyer has not returned requests for comment.

Remy Ma's Sentencing Pushed Back To May

A month after being found guilty on four counts of assault, Bronx-bred rapper Remy Ma's fate still hangs in the balance as sentencing for her criminal trial has been adjourned until next month.

According to Remy's attorney, Ivan Fisher, the Grammy nominated rapper's sentence date, which was initially set for April 23, was rescheduled until May 13 at 10 a.m.

As SOHH previously reported, on March 27 a Manhattan jury convicted Remy (born Reminisce Smith) of first-degree assault and weapons charges for shooting her former friend, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, in the abdomen last July in a beef over the rapper's missing $3,000.

In a plea to her fans via MySpace, Remy posted a message of endorsement asking admirers to send nice letters about the Bronx-bombshell to Judge Rena Uviller in hopes their voice will help shorten the 25-year sentence the rapper faces.

Despite the grim outlook, Fisher and his defense team plan to appeal the assault charges and are optimistic their motion will go to trial and Remy will be acquitted.

In related news, Remy's fellow femcee Foxy Brown, was released from prison last Friday (April 18) after serving 8 months for violating her probation in connection with a 2004 assault charge. [Watch Foxy enjoying her first few minutes of freedom here.]

Stay tuned to SOHH as more details develop in the Remy Ma trial.

Young Buck Says 50 Cent Is ''Jealous''

After being booted from G-Unit, Young Buck has finally broken his silence, addressing his situation with former group leader 50 Cent on the track, "My Interview." 50 recently announced that Buck was no longer part of the group during an interview with New York's Hot 97 radio station.

On "My Interview" Buck finally offers fans some insight into his conflict with the G-Unit General.

"I heard the same things you heard like 50 kicked him out / or Buck sniffs coke and he flips out / it's too late, the whole world know what I be bout," he rhymes on the track.

Throughout the track, the Cashville MC takes jabs at Fif comparing their relationship to the Biblical figures, brothers Kane and Able.

"Abel was the youngest but Kane was the oldest / Kane had the money but Abel stayed focused / I came around and Able got closest / Kane got jealous started showing his emotions."

The song's release comes on the heels of 50's media campaign explaining his disappointment with Buck. In a recent interview 50 said he was really shocked with Buck's statements about never receiving any royalty checks from G-Unit and that Buck's financial problems caused him to lie.

"That was a shocker from Young Buck," 50 said. "The last thing that I felt would ever be even said would be that [the members of G-Unit] weren't paid because they actually were overpaid."

"He lives like a drug dealer," he added. "When the artist spends excessively to the point where he doesn't actually have that money anymore, out of desperation he says whatever he can say to try and fix situations."

Buck is currently gearing up for the release of his new mixtape, "Honorable Discharge: Cashville Chronicles" later this month. He will also be dropping the documentary DVD, A Billion Bucks, following him throughout his everyday life on June 10th Source: http://rapgodfathers.com/news/1-late...esponse-record

Nas Drops Controversial Song "Be A N*g*er Too"; Calls Out All Races

Queensbridge rapper has just released a new song titled "Be A N*g*er Too," a track from his highly anticipated album, N*g*er.

The single "Be A N*g*er Too" is the first official release from Nas’ album, which has drawn intense scrutiny due to the album’s simple, yet controversial title.

The lyrics on "Be A N*g*er Too" gives listeners a glimpse into the direction Nas’ album may take.

On the track, which was produced by Salaam Remi and Big Jack, Nas makes his stance on the N-word clear through his lyrics and a slowed down delivery.

"The real N*g*ers are back on the radio," Nas says, before launching into his verse.

"Not mad cause Eminem said N*g*er/Cause he’s my N*g*er/zzzzzz/Cracker friend/We all black within/ We all African within/Some African’s don’t like us no way/A killin happened in Johannesburg yesterday.”

In a song that could be a lighting rod for controversy, Nas references the tragic murder of reggae star Lucky Dube in Johannesburg in October of 2007 and in the same line, name check’s the NAACP.

The hook for the song is a play on Dr. Pepper’s famous "Wouldn’t You Like to Be a Pepper Too" advertising slogan.

"I’m a N*g*er/He’s a N*g*er/she’s a N*g*er/we’s some N*g*er/wouldn’t you like to be a N*g*er too," Nas raps.

On the rest of the chorus, Nas name check’s Jews (Ki*e N*g*er), Hispanics (Sp*c N*g*er), Italians (Gu**ea N*g*er) and Asians (Ch*nk N*g*er), by using their respective racial epitaphs and embraces them as his N*g*er.

“They like to strangle N*g*er/blame a N*g*er/shoot a N*g*er/hang a N*g*er/still you wanna be a N*g*ertoo?/True.”

Nas' upcoming album zzzzzz is due in stores this year on Island Def Jam, a unit of Universal Music Group Source: http://rapgodfathers.com/news/1-late...-out-all-races

The 23 second beating left the two Waterloo, Ont., men, aged 23 and 26 years, lying like they were dead on the pavement as bystanders laughed and hooted. A female voice is also heard repeatedly yelling "that's ****** right there, ha, ha." As several people gathered around the men's prostrate bodies someone is heard saying "don't touch their necks man, watch their necks" before police and paramedics arrived. After competing in one of hip-hop's most epic SoundScan battles with Kanye West last year, 50 Cent is ready for round two. This time the G-Unit general along with his soldiers face off against their former cohort turned rival, The Game on June 24.

In what is already being dubbed a super-Tuesday showdown, 50 and G-Unit's sophomore release takes aim to Terminate on Site, while The Game's third-studio album Los Angeles Times. Fif caught up with SOHH to discuss the anticipated date and his plans on delivering the knock out punch to Game.

"He's going to get pushed back," 50 told SOHH. "The sh*t I heard so far is just trash from the Game's perspective."

As SOHH previously reported, the drama between G-Unit and Game stems from a 2005 altercation between 50 and Game's entourages, resulting in a shooting outside New York's Hot 97 FM radio station.

50 went on the air telling listeners that he dropped Game from G-Unit. Prior to Fifty's interview, Game appeared on the station earlier that evening. Fif began bashing Game's credibility and revealed that he wrote six records for the Cali rapper's multi-platinum debut, The Documentary.

According to police reports, upon hearing 50's comments, Chuck Taylor and his entourage returned to the station to confront Curtis. What ensued was a confrontation between both camps in front of the station resulting in a member of Game's crew being shot in the leg.

Since then, both camps have gone on record to publicly dissing one another. Now, in what has been years in the making, Game prepares to go against his former squad at the cash register. But if you let 50 tell it, there's really no competition. Curtis revealed the reason artist are scheduled to drop on June 24 is because that's the deadline for domestic albums to be distributed internationally.

"There are certain time periods," 50 explained. "[That's] the last date you can send [albums] to Germany, France and Switzerland. That's the date we have, that's why Nelly is on that date, Game's on that date. They all will initially try to make it around that time to get all of those [albums] shipped everywhere and promoted everywhere. But, to be honest they need to concentrate on making the right material because if you don't have the right record you could rush it out and just really flop."

Despite 50's prediction, Game doesn't seem to be worried with 50's antics. As SOHH previously reported, the Compton MC announced his third studio album would be his last. Dubbing LAX a classic album, Game claims his final set will address issues that other artists in hip-hop may be afraid to talk about on record. Touting it as a highly controversial album.

On June 24, two titans will clash, G-Unit's Terminate On Site via G-Unit/Aftermath/Interscope and The Game's Los Angeles Times LAX via Geffen. Who will come out on top?

The Cost Of Lil Wayne's Guest Spot/Verse

Saturday, April 19, 2008 0
As the hype continues to build towards Lil Wayne’s upcoming The Carter III, the accolades continue to come for Weezy as well.

Rolling Stone recently named Wayne “Best MC” in their Best of Rock 2008 issue. While it may be no surprise to many, it is what a Wayne guest appearance goes for these days that may shock people.
According to the feature, a verse from Weezy goes for $100k on average. The lowest Wayne will go to serve a hot sixteen? $75k.

"But nothing less!" Wayne says to the mag. "I wouldn't do a song for my sister for less than $75,000."

In the meanwhile, Wayne’s album is now staring at a June release date. The reason for the delay seems to be that Wayne is still recording new material. He also has been learning to play guitar (he recently played on Enrique Inglesias’ “Push”) and taking online classes at the University of Phoenix for a psychology degree.

Lil Wayne's The Carter III is due out June 10th on Universal/Cash Money.

SOHH Exclusive: Day 26 Reacts To Danity Kane's Higher Album Sales

Day 26, debuted at #1 on the charts but their first week sales didn't quite match up to those of their Bad Boy labelmates, Danity Kane. In this SOHH exclusive, we caught up with Brian, Big Mike, Que, Robert and Willlie, to discuss their defeat to DK, their thoughts on debuting at No. 1 and plans for the follow up single to their smash hit "Got Me Going."

"Big ups to Danity Kane," says Willie. "They been out before and have a lot of fans. Day 26 is new. [But] we did take the No. 1 spot our first week."

Despite debuting with the number one album in the country, Day 26's self-titled set failed to out sell Dantiy Kane's Welcome to The Dollhouse. According to Nielsen SoundScan, although the boy's sold the most albums for the week of April 2, with overall sales scanned at 190, 000, their grand total wasn't enough to top DK first week sales of 236, 000. The guys are taking the loss in stride.

"It was a blessing just to be number one," says Que. "A lot of artists come out and a lot of artist that been out, don't go No. 1 or they're No. 1 for a day and then No. 10 or No. 12 the next day. But we stayed No. 1 for a whole week. It was a blessing especially coming off a reality TV show and into the music business."

After three weeks, the boy band still trails behind moving only 265,000 copies of their debut compared to DK 399,400 albums sold. "The Making the Band" starlets remain in the Top 10 as the soul-singing quintet have gone from No. 1 slip to No. 18 on Billboards 200.

Mike and Brian offered insight into their defeat.

"They got out the first week when everyone was anticipating," explains Mike. "That's why they got more sales than us. People got a little broke and then the next week we came out, they ain't have no money..."

"Real talk, we did finish recording our album before Danity Kane, like two and half weeks before," injects Brian. "Our album was originally supposed to come out March 11, but Diddy felt like we needed to go out on the road and promote our album more. So that's the only reason Danity Kane came out before Day 26."

Although, the boys where dethroned by the girls there's still admiration between the groups. "We love them," explains Robert.

With the challenge behind them, Day 26 focus has shifted to the second single to their self-titled debut. Not only will the boys release a follow up to "Got Me Going," there are plans to drop two second singles, "Since You Been Gone" and "In My Bed."

The pressure of releasing one single would be enough for any group, but as Robert states confidently, Bad Boy's don't panic. "It's going to be two singles and two videos," he reveals. "Double the flavor. Double the fun."

Breaking News: Foxy Brown Released From Rikers, "I'm Back Baby!" (vid)

After serving eight months of a one year sentence in a New York prison, Foxy Brown was officially released today (April 18) at approximately 12:45 p.m.

Before jumping into a white Rolls Royce Phantom and leading a caravan of cars away, Foxy (born Inga Marchand) greeted the fans, media and well-wishers who waited outside the jail. She embraced many of the bystanders and offered thanks.

"This is a big day for me," Brown told SOHH. "To have everybody here that I love, my whole family, the whole Brooklyn, the officers that took care of me at Rikers. Eight months to the day, I remember going in in August and I said when I come out, I'm coming out even better. And I'm back baby, it's a wrap." [Watch Video Below]

Foxy's manager and Black Hand Entertainment CEO, Chazz Williams, who was on the scene today told SOHH, "It's a beautiful day. I was out here when she went in and I'm here when she's coming out. You can expect big things from her and we won't be walking this path again any time soon."

In a prior interview Williams explained the rapper's release to SOHH, "She is not getting out early. Foxy served her entire sentence [under] good time, that is, days deducted by the law that every prisoner gets unless it's procedurally taken [away] for breaking prison rules."

As SOHH previously reported, the Brooklyn-bred rapper was sentenced to a year in New York's Riker's Island after violating her probation in connection with a 2004 assault charge.

Foxy was on probation for assaulting two manicurists in a Manhattan salon in 2004. She was warned by a judge in March 2007 that she would be sent to prison for a year if she got into any trouble with the law.

Five months after the warning, Foxy was sentenced and incarcerated (Sept. 7) for assaulting her neighbor, Arleen Raymond.

Early conflicts while in prison such as physical altercations with fellow inmates, verbally abusing a corrections officer and refusing to provide a urine sample, landed Foxy in the hole for misconduct. While she was initially supposed to serve 76 days in solitary confinement, she was released in 40 days for good behavior.

With her release, Foxy's focus is now on her fourth studio album Brooklyn's Don Diva. The album, her first with Black Rose Entertainment/Koch Records, was supposed to drop on February 5th, but was pushed back to await the rapper's release.

As for her rumored VH1 reality series, Willaims said, "We are in talks with a number of networks and film studios regarding new opportunities."

Brooklyn's Don Diva is scheduled to be released on May 13.

Stay tuned, more details to come.

R. Kelly's Relationship W/ Aaliyah To Be Used Against Him In Child Porn Trial?

R&B superstar R. Kelly's tainted past can't escape him. Prosecutors in the embattled singer's upcoming child pornography trail want to introduce evidence of other crimes that Kells allegedly committed.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, court documents show that earlier this month prosecutors filed a motion to allow evidence of other crimes to be used in the trial, including, Kells' 1995 marriage to the late singer Aaliyah, when she was 15. Initially both camps denied the union, but Vibe magazine later published a copy of their marriage license, which showed Aaliyah's age had been falsely listed at 18. The marriage was annulled a few months after the report.

The 41 year-old Grammy award-winning singer (born Robert Sylvester Kelly) is accused of videotaping himself having sex with an underage female. In February 2002 a sex-tape was sent to the Chicago paper by an unknown source. The video allegedly features Kells having intercourse with a then 14-year-old niece of his former protégé, Sparkle.

The motion was a subject of a two-hour, closed-door hearing on Friday, April 11 before Judge Vincent Gaughan.

The troubled star is facing 14 counts of child pornography charges, to which he has pled not guilty. Jury selection for the trial begins on May 9.

In related news, according to Jive Records, the pied piper is gearing a summer release of his thirteenth studio album 12 Play Fourth Quarter. The follow up to 2007's Double Up, Kelly made the announcement during his newly released remix of Mariah Carey's hit, "Touch My Body." The first single "Hair Braider," is starting to heat up the airwaves as director Malcolm Jones shot the video in Chi-town last month.

Lil' Wayne named Rolling Stone's Best MC of 2008

Lil Wayne has two primary passions: making music and smoking weed. Tonight, those have come into conflict. Wayne is sitting on his tour bus in New Orleans, having come back to his hometown for two concerts. He'd like to head into a studio to do some mixing for Tha Carter III, 2008's most anticipated rap album. But there's a problem. Wayne isn't allowed to smoke in the studio. So he stays on the bus, lighting blunt after blunt and watching Animal Planet on the TV. He'll sleep there tonight for the same reason: Wayne can't smoke in his hotel room either.

When Wayne speaks, it's with that same voice from his records: a needling, grizzled croak that's one of the most distinctive sounds in pop music. On the bus, Wayne comes off as a funny motherfucker. He leaves everyone in stitches with a story about how he had to clean graffiti off a house owned by Cash Money Records founder Bryan "Baby" Williams. "We were out there scrubbing for a day!" he shrieks. "That shit is still on the house, nigga! Even after Katrina!"

Wayne's not always like this. Sometimes he's pensive, and he can turn surly without notice. Oftentimes, he's just plain weird: Over dinner in Miami last summer, he spluttered through a half-coherent, very stoned monologue in which he compared people in New Orleans to crabs in boiling water, then segued into the kind of crabs that show up in your pants: "I had that shit! The worst!"

Wayne's rhymes are as varied as his moods, ranging from quick-tongued braggadocio about girls, cash and guns to gut-wrenching expressions of personal pain. He's a compulsively listenable dude who will sometimes sing (badly) and rhyme in French; a five-foot-six-inch bundle of energy spitting left-field references — Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bill Laimbeer, tooth fairies — and consistently great punch lines: "My spot remain, like a bleach stain, or cranberry/It's murder she wrote, like Angela Lansbury." He's been getting stranger lately, too, turning out stream-of-consciousness flows and trippy flights of fancy like the amazing mixtape cut "I Feel Like Dying," on which he sounds seriously zonked: "I can mingle with the stars and throw a party on Mars/I am a prisoner locked up behind Xanax bars." He may be all over the place, but this is certain: Lil Wayne — a.k.a. Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., a.k.a. the Pussy Monster, a.k.a. Weezy F. Baby — is one of the most unusual rappers of all time. And right now, he's the best around. Just ask him. Wayne began calling himself "the greatest rapper alive" in 2005. Since then, he's been repeating and backing up that claim on cameos and countless mixtapes. Two of those mixes — Da Drought 3 and The Drought Is Over 2: The Carter III Sessions — were among the best albums of 2007.

Wayne grew up a wild kid in New Orleans who dealt crack and once accidentally shot himself in the chest. "It was my mom's gun," Wayne says. "It was like a chopper hit me. But the bullet went straight through, and I bounced back in two weeks." Thankfully, Wayne soon discovered hip-hop and began battle-rapping. When he was eleven, he had the good fortune of befriending Baby Williams and started helping out at Cash Money Records. By the time he was fourteen, Wayne had a record deal.

From there, Wayne became moderately famous as a pint-size member of the rap supergroup Hot Boys, and he proved an above-average gangsta MC on his early albums. Recently, though, he's attained a level of greatness hardly anyone could have expected, spitting rhymes that are wittier, odder and broader in subject matter than anyone else's. In the past year, stars like Kanye West and Jay-Z have featured Wayne on their songs. And he's become a constant presence on hip-hop message boards and blogs, which feature feverish chatter about Wayne's latest stanzas, his sexual preferences (sparked by a photo of him kissing mentor Williams), his drug use and occasional legal troubles. (He's currently facing gun- and drug-possession charges in New York and Arizona. Wayne pleaded not guilty in both cases.)

Wayne is also the rare pop star who has been able to dramatically raise his profile in the last two years without releasing an official LP. There's a wealth of Wayne material — all those mixtapes and leaked songs — that has surfaced online. The hip-hop merch site mixunit.com sells twenty-three mixes featuring Wayne, most of which are easy to find online for free. This isn't some kind of viral marketing plan. It's just this: Wayne makes new songs like you make lunch, and songs have a way of getting out — especially when they're as irresistible as Wayne's.

How many tracks has Wayne cut in recent years? "Somewhere in the thousands," he says. (He's been smoking.) The real number is probably closer to 500, but what's clear is that Wayne is an irrepressible studio rat. "Recording is an addiction," he says. "I can't stop." Wayne works quickly — he writes nothing down, records rhymes as soon as they pop into his head, and completes up to five songs a day. He can also knock out a verse for someone else within a half-hour of hearing the beat. That has served him well financially: Wayne charges $100,000 for the average cameo — or $75,000 if he likes the beat or the song. "But nothing less!" Wayne says. "I wouldn't do a song for my sister for less than $75,000."

After more than six months of delays, Wayne's sixth official solo album is finally slated for June. This is partly because Wayne wants to keep tweaking songs; and partly because of difficulty in getting clearance from featured artists' record labels (he's recorded with Lil Mama and Busta Rhymes, among others). Another possible reason: All the prospective Carter III material that's leaked online has prompted Wayne to record new album tracks, which only extends the delay; Wayne has said that no leaked material will end up on Carter III. Though Carter III will probably be one of 2008's best-selling hip-hop albums, it's hard to imagine it being better than Wayne's best mixtapes. Wayne doesn't seem concerned — in fact, he won't even help select the track list. "I just come up with good songs," he says. "It's up to [Universal Records] to figure out what goes on. I don't want that headache."

After a late night on the bus, Wayne steps into a class at Eleanor McMain Secondary School in New Orleans, which he attended back in the Nineties. He's here for a Q-and-A session. Wayne cheerfully answers kids' questions about his nine-year-old daughter, his favorite cameo (Destiny's Child's "Soldier") and Lil Wayne haters out there ("If they ain't talking about you, you ain't doing nothin'," he says). After forty-five minutes with the kids, Wayne climbs back into the tour bus. He visits a Katrina-damaged athletic field, which he's helping to restore through his new One Family Foundation, then heads off to play a gig in Atlanta. Wayne's tour will end within weeks, but he's not taking any time off. Soon he'll put the finishing touches on Carter III and head off on his first-ever European tour.

Maybe Wayne will find time to improve his guitar skills; he's a self-taught axman who played on Enrique Iglesias' "Push." Or maybe he'll get his psychology degree, too; he's been taking online classes from the University of Phoenix. Maybe he'll also shrink from fame — sort of (but hopefully not exactly) like his favorite rock star, Kurt Cobain. "He was a rebel — he didn't give a fuck," Wayne says. "That's me."

50 Cent Sheds Light On Young Buck's Money Problems, "He Lives Like A Drug Dealer"

After recently dumping Young Buck from his G-Unit click, SOHH caught up with hip-hop mogul 50 Cent to discuss to the rumors surrounding Buck's dismissal.

Last week 50 called into New York radio station Hot 97 to officially drop the rapper from G-Unit. Since making the big announcement, Fif told SOHH exclusively he has not spoken to Buck.

"He can hear it from the radio like everybody else," he proclaimed.

As SOHH previously reported, one of the major disputes between both rappers was over comments Buck made, in which he claimed he never received any royalties from 50.

"That was a shocker from Young Buck," 50 said. "The last thing that I felt would ever be even said would be that [the members of G-Unit] weren't paid because they actually were overpaid. My concept for being able to continuously win championship games is to keep the players fed."

Fif blames Young Buck's lack of money on excessive spending.

"He lives like a drug dealer," he said. "When the artist spends excessively to the point where he doesn't actually have that money anymore, out of desperation he says whatever he can say to try and fix situations."

50 also denied the rumors that he was pocketing Buck's royalty checks in order to collect money he loaned the Ten-A-Key rapper to bail him out of tax trouble. While he confirmed that he loaned the rapper money, he said he never tried to make good on the loan.

"No, I never took a royalty check to recoup for anything," he revealed. "Yeah, he had tax trouble. I helped him like I helped everybody else."

"With Buck there was points where it was up to $330,000 that I had loaned out to him [and] he continued to spend the way that he would regularly spend," he added.

Though he was still indebted to 50, the Queens-bred rapper said that over time Buck was pulling away from G-Unit creatively and worked hard to establish his own label, Cashville Records.

50 says Buck's dismissal had nothing to do with the launch of the label and that he "encouraged" it. He says the same of former G-Unit member The Game. "If it was up to me Black Wall Street would've existed with Game being cool with G-Unit."

G-Unit's sophomore album, Terminate On Site is scheduled to hit stores on June 24th.
