A Binghamton University basketball player may regret playing it safe.
Malik Alvin, 20, was suspended from the team after being charged last week with stealing condoms from a local Wal-Mart, according to the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin.
On Oct. 26, Alvin tried to leave the store with the contents of a box of Trojan Magnum condoms stuffed into the pockets of his pants. While eluding security, he ran into a 66-year-old customer, knocking her to the floor. She sustained a concussion from the run-in.
Documents state that security saw Alvin take two boxes of prophylactics into the store's restroom, where he hid 36 condoms — the contents of an entire box — in his pockets. He left the second box behind.
Alvin pled not guilty to shoplifting and third-degree assault charges.
Kevin Broadus, BU men's basketball coach, declined to comment about the suspension, but John Hartick, athletic director for communications at BU, told the Press & Sun Bulletin that Alvin could apply for reinstatement to the team when the charges are resolved.
Alvin, who transferred to BU this summer, could be fined or jailed for up to a year if he is found guilty of either charge.
Binghamton University offers free condoms to students through its health center and Resident Assistant offices. The box of Magnum condoms Alvin allegedly stole cost $13.94, according to records obtained by the Press & Sun Bulletin.
